Laser Beam Welding with Filler Wire

Laser beam welding of cast iron with filler wire

Technology

Cast iron can be safely and crack-free laser beam welded with the two variants

  • Induction-supported laser beam welding,
  • laser beam welding with filler.

In induction-supported laser beam welding, the heat supplied by induction before, during, or after laser irradiation enables the process to be controlled in such a way that transient stresses are reduced, cracks are avoided, undesirable hardening is reduced or avoided, the formation of thermally more stable phases is favoured, and the welding rate is increased. In laser beam welding with filler, the composition is modified in such a way that the formation of ductile phases is favoured, which guarantees crack-free weld seams.

Applications

Laser beam welding of cast iron with filler wire is an efficient technique for joining cast parts as well as for joining cast iron with constructional steels, case-hardening steels, and tempering steels. It offers a wider field of options for novel design and cost reduction.
