Rapid Tooling with Melato
Metal Laminated Tooling (Melato®) is a novel technique for rapid
generation of larger steel tools and dies. The CAD-models of the parts
to be generated are transformed into a stack of slabs suitable for being
cut from sheet metal by means of laser beam cutting. The blanks obtained
in this way are subsequently stacked and joined so that the part to be
generated grows sheet by sheet. For example, embossing tools ready for
use can be generated within 10% of the usual time.

Laser Hardening of Tools and Components
The selective hardening of complex shaped tools and components with the
laser beam has the advantage of a small heat influence on the base material.
The hardening zone can be tailored to the actual demand of the application,
which makes the process interesting for not only wear, but also fatigue-loaded
components. Combination processes (e.g. laser and induction) enable larger
processing speeds and increase process stability with materials that are
difficult to harden.

Hard Coatings for Tools
Arc discharges as a source of high-energy vapor jets are used extensively
for the industrial hard coating of tools. The process generates excellent
coatings and surface properties. Tight adherence of the coatings to the
tools can be achieved at low deposition temperatures.
