East Lansing, November 17, 2006: City of Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero
visited the Coatings Division of the Fraunhofer Center for Coatings and
Laser Applications (CCL), in East Lansing this week. He was accompanied
by Bob Trezise, Manager at the Economic Development Corporation of the
City of Lansing and Kara Wood, Director of the Downtown Core SmartZonesm
Liaison.

Mayor Bernero and his team were particularly interested
in the diamond coating technology research that is being carried out at
the Fraunhofer CCL Coatings Division. Because of diamond's extraordinary
properties, it has potential as a superb engineering material for a wide
variety of applications ranging from advanced engine design to high tech
electronic applications, MEMS and even biomedical implants. Fraunhofer
CCL, working together with its partner Michigan State University, has
received funding from the MEDC 21st Century Jobs Fund in order to extend
its commercialization activities in the area of its unique carbon-based
materials expertise.

"We intend to grow this city" said Mayor Bernero "and
we see organizations like Fraunhofer CCL playing an important part in
helping to transfer new technology to the region."
Fraunhofer CCL works closely with its partner Michigan State University
bridge the gap between university research and industry by providing innovative
applied research services to industry and government customers. Using
joint laboratories, personnel and equipment resources CCL conducts research
projects contributing to innovations in key technology sectors.
